Locations and bins
Lay out each warehouse in zones and bins, print labels, and set fixed bins.
Overview
Locations and bins is the layout of a warehouse: zones, and the numbered bins on the shelves where every unit sits. Each bin has a purpose, a walking order for picking, and a barcode label.
Why use it
- Know exactly where every unit is.
- Give pickers the shortest walk.
- Scan bins instead of searching shelves.
Zones and bins
Open Stock → Warehouse Management → Locations and bins and choose the warehouse at the top. Bins are grouped in tabs by purpose, each with its own colour and bin count.
- 1Create a zone, for example "A" or "Cold room".
- 2Create bins from a pattern such as A-01..20-1..5 (aisle A, racks 01 to 20, levels 1 to 5 = 100 bins), or paste a list of codes. O2M shows what it will create and skips codes that exist.
- 3Give each bin a purpose (receiving, storage, pick face, packing, staging, returns, QC or damaged), a pick sequence (the walking order on picklists), whether it is pickable, and an optional capacity.
A bin's code never changes. Its barcode is the warehouse code and bin code, for example BLR.A-01-1. Up to 5,000 bins can be created at once and 50,000 per warehouse. An empty bin, or a zone with no active bins, can be archived.
Bin labels
Select bins and click Labels to download a PDF of barcode labels in 100 × 50 mm, 75 × 50 mm or A4 sheets of 24. With the thermal printing add-on, print them on a Zebra-compatible printer.
Bin contents and moving stock
Click a bin to see what is in it, with product images, lots and states. Move units from one bin to another here, or with the scanner app's Move screen. Moving between bins never changes your totals or your channels.
Fixed bins
| Bin purpose | Used for |
|---|---|
| Receiving | Goods arriving from suppliers wait here before putaway |
| Storage | Bulk stock |
| Pick face | Stock pickers take from first |
| Packing / staging | Picked units wait here to be packed |
| Returns | Returned parcels wait here to be graded |
| QC | Units waiting for a quality check |
| Damaged | Units that cannot be sold |
Give an item a fixed bin per warehouse from the item page, the Fixed bins list (paste SKU and bin pairs) or a putaway task (Make fixed bin). The fixed bin is suggested first when that item is put away, and an empty fixed bin is not offered to other items. It is a preference, not a lock.
